Which Off-Road Ford F-150 Model Is Right for You: The Raptor or the Tremor?

The Ford F-150 has been America’s top-selling light-duty pickup for over 46 years, and we don’t see that reputation going anywhere soon. As a Ford truck dealer, we get a lot of questions about the F-150’s off-road-ready trims: the Tremor and the Raptor. Both formidable pickups, these trims are distinctly beefier and more capable than the other trims. However, they are also distinctly different from one another, even though Ford did design each with drivers who travel away from paved roads in mind.
With about a $15,000 difference between the two (the Raptor being the pricier pick), it’s no wonder people want the details on how these models differ. Paying for the Raptor makes sense for some drivers, but not all. We want to educate our shoppers so you can put your dollars to work in the best ways possible. So below, we’ll break down the differences between the 2024 F-150 Tremor and Raptor.
The Raptor Is For Drivers Who Seek Rough Roads
We’ll start with the pricier and more capable Raptor. With a starting MSRP of $77,980, the Raptor packs a serious off-road-ready punch that makes it well worth the price jump from the Tremor for avid explorers.[a] The engine options for the Raptor are a 3.5L V6 EcoBoost High Output V6 and the option for a 5.0L V8 that offers 400 hp and 410 lb-ft of torque. There’s also the available High-Output 5.2L Supercharged V8 that produces a whopping 700 hp and 640 lb-ft of torque. With a rear axle ratio of 4.10:1, it offers exceptional torque when towing a vessel at low speeds. It’s a 4×4 truck that will get you traction on all wheels at all times.
The Raptor sits atop huge 34-inch all-terrain tires on 17-inch cast aluminum wheels. You can also opt for an equipment package that bumps those tires up to 37 inches. These are prepared to get you the traction you need on mud, dirt, sand, and any messy terrain. In some configurations, you’ll enjoy 12 inches of ground clearance from the Raptor.
One of the more stand-out features of the Raptor is the 5-Link Rear Suspension. Offering tremendous lateral stability and traction, it reduces the chances of a rollover and helps you feel in command on rough roads. Then there’s the available FOX Dual-Live Valve shocks that improve rebound, making for a less bumpy ride, even when your path is very turbulent.
You can also use one-pedal driving in the Raptor, which allows you to brake and accelerate using just the gas pedal. When you’re navigating truly tumultuous terrain, moving your foot back and forth between the brake and gas becomes tiresome — this feature relieves you of some of that work, so you can focus more on steering around those boulders and streams.
Then, there’s Ford Trail Control. Think of it like cruise control for low-speed driving. When you want to sit back, relax, and enjoy the sites on your hilly terrain, let Ford Trail Control take over accelerating and braking for you. No matter what terrain you explore, one of the seven selectable drive modes should make the appropriate adjustments to help your vehicle adapt. So now you’ve got a good look at the Raptor. Let’s move on to the Tremor.

The Tremor Is for Drivers Who Unintentionally Find Themselves on Rough Roads
The Tremor’s starting MSRP sits at $63,950.[a] It’s quite a bit more affordable than the Raptor, and that’s because it isn’t made for environments as rugged as the Raptor. Still, it’ll help you tackle messy terrain should your day-to-day life take you to mud and dirt roads. The Tremor has the same engine options as the Raptor — the 5.0L V8 is standard, while the 3.5L EcoBoost V6 is an available option. So, beneath the hood, these two pickups can appear identical. Plus, it’s also a 4×4, like the Raptor. Get to know them better, though, and you’ll see that these two vehicles appeal to very different drivers.
First, the Tremor’s rear axle ratio sits at 3.73, so you’re favoring fuel economy over pulling power here. The Tremor does enjoy a special off-road-tuned suspension, but it’s not the five-link one on the Raptor. And while the Raptor’s ground clearance can hit 12 inches, the Tremor’s tops out at 9.4 inches. Now, that’s certainly better than the 8.3 and 8.7 inches you get on the non-off-road trims, which we like to point out because the Tremor is definitely more prepared to tackle bumpy roads than the starting models.
The Tremor benefits from impressive breakover and departure angles, so you can go from a completely flat surface to climbing or descending a steep hill without concern of damage to the front or rear of your vehicle. The steel skid plates help with that, too. The Tremor rolls on 35-inch all-terrain tires. You still get the all-terrain construction found in the Raptor but on slightly smaller tires. It also has many selectable drive modes and Trail Control, like the Raptor. It even has one-pedal driving, too.
You’ll find a lot of focus on off-road style in the Tremor, but style that can boost function. For example, there is an available coast-to-coast grille, which naturally boosts off-road looks but also makes it easier to attach front accessories to get more tasks done. An available light bar looks cool while improving visibility in low-light settings. There’s also an available winch kit, which is admittedly all about function and can support 12,000 lbs. On the side, you’ll find a Tremor box decal; on the inside, you’ll find unique Tremor stitching and even the running boards boast Tremor-specific style details. Even the floor mats have Tremor aesthetics.

Get the Tremor for Everyday Life; Get the Raptor for Adventures
When customers come to us and ask us which truck is best for them — the Tremor or the Raptor — we respond to their question with a question. We ask, “Do you go off-roading for sport, or do your regular activities take you to off-road environments?” Drivers who love the thrill of seeking out the most challenging of terrains should opt for the Raptor; drivers looking for a good everyday truck that can tackle muddy paths, dirt roads, and some rock-littered trails should get the Tremor.
Ford designed the Tremor with shoppers looking for a work truck in mind. You can see it through features like the winch and the lower ground clearance, which offer better aerodynamics for freeway driving. The Raptor, on the other hand, was made for adventure, and adventures call for more rugged features.
