Which Engine Is Best for Your Ford F-150?

That’s a great question, and it’s one we’ve asked a lot since our customers come to us looking for a powerful truck that can handle anything they throw at it. If you’re interested in a Ford F-150 for sale near Indianapolis, then it’s important you choose a truck that is up to the task for whatever you need it to do. We can’t tell you which engine is right for you since only you know what you’re looking for, but we can take you through the options that Ford offers and check out what each of them can do. This will give you a sense of the kind of power Ford packs under the F-150’s hood and make it easier to decide which is best for your truck. Let’s take a look at the six available engines, the kind of performance they deliver, their potential for towing and payload, and their fuel efficiency to get a full picture of each impressive powertrain.
2.7L EcoBoost Turbocharged V6––Standard Engine, Impressive Power
To start with, we have the standard engine for the 2024 Ford F-150, which gives us the foundation for performance and capability that every other powertrain builds on. This engine delivers an impressive 325 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque; it comes paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission, which is the standard transmission for every engine we’ll look at today. In terms of capability, it can handle up to 8,400 lbs of towing and up to 1,785 lbs of payload capacity when properly configured.
You get an estimated 19 MPG in the city, 25 MPG on the highway, and 21 MPG of combined fuel economy with this engine and a rear-wheel drive (RWD) version of the F-150. You lose a bit of fuel efficiency if you go with four-wheel drive (4WD), but only about one MPG in each category when driving around Indianapolis. This is the standard engine for the XL, STX, and XLT models, ensuring every F-150 delivers a great driving experience.
5.0L “Coyote” V8––Upgraded Capability for Indianapolis Drivers
If you’re looking for enhanced power and capability beyond what comes standard, but you’re not interested in going “overboard” in terms of performance, then this engine is a great one to check out. It delivers straightforward muscle with 400 hp and 410 lb-ft of torque, offering you a direct upgrade from the performance of the starting engine. It’s also a huge increase in capability: the 5.0L V8 engine offers up to 12,900 lbs of towing capacity and up to 2,230 lbs of maximum payload. Keep in mind that how you have your truck configured greatly impacts these numbers, too, so check out the particular specs of any model you want before making a purchase.
You lose a bit of fuel efficiency with this one, but not much; it lets the F-150 get an estimated 17 MPG in the city, 25 MPG on the highway, and 20 MPG of combined fuel economy with RWD. Much like the standard engine, going with 4WD instead costs you about one MPG in each category. This is a great engine and a terrific choice if you want towing and payload that come close to the best the 2024 F-150 can offer. It’s available for the XL, STX, XLT, and Raptor models; you get this engine standard on the Lariat and Tremor trims.

3.5L EcoBoost Turbocharged V6––Peak Capability for the F-150
If you want the best capability available for getting around Indianapolis in the 2024 Ford F-150, then this is the engine for you, though the 5.0L V8 we just looked at comes mighty close. This beauty delivers 400 hp and a massive 500 lb-ft of torque, which is remarkable for a 3.5L engine. All that power lets it handle up to 13,500 lbs of towing and up to 2,445 lbs of payload capacity—these are the highest ratings for the F-150 in both categories.
With this engine, the F-150 gets an estimated 16 MPG in the city, 24 MPG on the highway, and 19 MPG of combined fuel efficiency with RWD or 4WD; the ratings are identical. This is a bit lower gas mileage than the previous two engines and their best ratings, but it’s not by much, and you get tremendous muscle in exchange. This engine is an available option for the XL, XLT, and Lariat trims; it’s standard on the King Ranch and Platinum models.
3.5L EcoBoost High Output V6––Robust Power and Performance
While the previous one we looked at offers the pinnacle of capability for the F-150, it’s not the highest in terms of performance and power output (this one isn’t either, but we’re getting there). If you want something with more oomph under the hood, then check out this High Output version of the 3.5L EcoBoost V6 that provides 450 hp and 510 lb-ft of torque. That’s not a huge increase, but it makes a difference that you can feel; in terms of capability, this engine lets the F-150 handle up to 8,200 lbs of towing and 1,410 lbs of payload capacity.
This engine (and the next two we look at) is only available with a 4WD setup, where it gets an estimated 14 MPG in the city, 18 MPG on the highway, and 16 MPG of combined fuel efficiency. We’ll admit that’s quite a bit lower than the first few engines, but if you’re looking for tremendous performance, then some sacrifices are inevitable. This is the standard engine for the Ford F-150 Raptor and is not offered on any other model, though there’s another engine available for the Raptor that tends to get more headlines (we’ll get there in a moment).
3.5L PowerBoost Turbocharged Hybrid V6––Penultimate Power
If you’re interested in an incredible combination of massive performance, great capability, and top-tier fuel efficiency, then this is the engine for you. With a hybrid system designed to enhance its power and gas mileage, this engine delivers 430 hp and a remarkable 570 lb-ft of torque. All that muscle lets it haul up to 11,200 lbs when towing, along with 1,735 lbs of maximum payload capacity, giving you plenty of power and the ability to tackle anything you need.
What’s most remarkable about this engine (though it’s no surprise since this is a hybrid) is that it gets an estimated 22 MPG in the city, 24 MPG on the highway, and 23 MPG of combined fuel efficiency with 4WD. That’s better gas mileage than any other engine, even when paired with RWD, and comes out on top overall. As we said, this engine beautifully combines everything we look for from the powertrain in our truck; it’s available for the XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, and Platinum trims of the 2024 F-150.

5.2L “Predator” High Output Supercharged V8––Unleash the F-150 Raptor
Now, we come to the ultimate beast in the selection of engines available for the 2024 Ford F-150 and the unbeatable power it provides Indianapolis drivers. This 5.2L High Output Supercharged V8 engine delivers an incredible 720 hp and 640 lb-ft of torque, giving you the kind of power you simply won’t find anywhere else. Don’t worry about gas mileage or towing with this monster; that’s not what it’s designed for. This is an engine built for speed and getting the most from the Raptor, whether you find yourself on the track, on the trail, or anywhere in between. It’s a niche option, but if you’re after some serious bragging rights, then it’s the one for you.
Which Engine Has What You’re Looking For?
At this point, you likely have a pretty good sense of what each engine for the 2024 Ford F-150 is capable of and perhaps even which one is right for you. The standard powertrain is a great place to start and works well for many drivers, though if you’re looking for enhanced power and capability, then the 5.0L V8 is hard to beat. For the best capability available, you’ll want to go with the 3.5L EcoBoost Turbocharged V6 and the remarkable capacities it offers; just remember that you need to choose the right combination of options to take advantage of everything it can do. But if you’re looking for an all-star engine that beautifully combines power, capability, and efficiency, then the hybrid V6 is the way to go. No matter what you want from your next truck, Ford has you covered; here at Pearson Ford, we’re ready to help you find what you need.
