Signs Your Ford Needs an Oil Change
A regular oil change is crucial for keeping your Ford running smoothly. If you can’t remember the last time you scheduled an oil change, here are a few signs to be on the lookout for.
Low Oil Level
Checking your oil level is a straightforward process. Simply open the hood and locate the dipstick. The dipstick will protrude from the engine and be shaped like a ring pull. Remove the dipstick and wipe it clean with a cloth, then reinsert it. Remove it once more and check the oil level against the marks on the dipstick. Most dipsticks have two marks signifying the minimum and maximum oil levels, but if yours looks different check the owner’s manual for more information. Whenever your oil level has fallen below the minimum mark, it’s time for more oil.
Dark Color
Fresh motor oil will be light brown in color. Over time, oil begins to darken to the point that it can become black and thick. When checking your oil level, be sure to pay attention to the oil’s color. Is it still light and transparent, or does it looked burnt? If the latter is true, you need to schedule an oil change rather than topping off your oil level. Old oil contains particles that can clog engine parts, reducing your Ford’s efficiency.
Gritty Consistency
If you don’t mind getting your hands dirty, rub some of the oil from the dipstick between your finger and thumb. If it feels coarse or gritty, the oil likely contains contaminants and needs to be replaced. Fresh oil should be free or particles and still feel slick, so you’ll be able to notice the difference right away.
The Oil Change Light is On
Modern Fords come equipped with oil replacement lights that alert drivers when it’s time for an oil change. Even if you don’t remember when you last changed the oil, this handy indicator will illuminate as soon as your next change comes due according to manufacturer recommendations. Don’t confuse this light with the oil pressure light, though, which is represented with an oil can with dripping oil. If you see that light, you need to stop the car immediately and turn off the engine.
It’s Been More Than 3,000 Miles
Manufacturer guidelines for oil changes vary by vehicle, so familiarize yourself with your model’s needs. Most cars need to have their oil replaced every 3,000 miles, but modern vehicles like the Ford Fiesta can go as far as 10,000 miles between oil changes. If you had your last oil change at a professional service center, you should have received a sticker indicating when you’ll need to have it changed again, which is normally located on your windshield.
The Engine is Making Noises
If it’s been too long since your last oil change, your engine might be noisier than usual. Oil lubricates engine parts, so when fresh oil isn’t available, you’ll start to hear knocking and other sounds indicating that it’s time for a replacement.
When in doubt, bring your vehicle into Pearson Ford for your next oil change. We’ll help you stay on top of your Ford’s maintenance schedule.
