5 Tips for Being a Smart Winter Driver

Winter can be tough, especially on your vehicle. That is why we at Pearson Ford want to make sure you and your vehicle are prepared for harsh winter driving conditions beforehand. There are many different precautions drivers can take to properly prepare themselves and their vehicles for “tough love” of the winter months. Below are 5 tips that we want to make sure you are aware of before you hit the road this winter. Check them out:

#1 Keep an Emergency Supply Box in the Car

Unfortunately, accidents happen. If you are ever involved in an accident during the winter, you should be extra prepared. It can sometimes take a while before the proper authorities arrive so you should keep an emergency supply box filled with first aid materials, non-perishable food items, and a blanket in your trunk—just in case.

#2 Use Winter Mix Windshield Washer Fluid

When the windshield has a thin layer of ice on it, one of the natural choices is to use windshield wiper fluid and the windshield wipers to clear the windshield. However, if the vehicle has normal wiper fluid in the canister, it will freeze solid and will not help to clean off the windshield. So, make sure to switch out the normal washer fluid with a winter mix at the beginning of the season to ensure it does not freeze.

#3 Make Sure Your Tires are Fully Inflated

Icy road conditions sometimes require a longer distance to come to a complete stop. Under-inflated tired increase the likelihood of losing control of the vehicle on icy roads and increase that distance it takes to come to a complete stop. Make sure that your tires are fully inflated to manufacturer-recommended pressure so you can be sure to keep control of the wheel in hazardous conditions.

#4 Keep Your Gas Tank at Least 1/2 Full

One of the worst things that could happen during a winter would be to have the gas line in your vehicle freeze up. This means that your car will not get the gas it needs to run, and getting it fixed will cost you. Be sure to keep the tank at the halfway mark, and you shouldn’t have any issues.

#5 Do Not Drive When You are Tired

Driving in winter conditions takes an extra amount of alertness and readiness. Getting the proper amount of sleep before heading out into the winter weather can reduce driving risks and keep you safe.
