The History of Ford

The Ford Motor Company was incorporated in 1903 and started with a total of just twelve stockholders, which is a far cry from the many investors who hold stock in this great American company today. Ford also made waves when he offered his workers $5 per hour––over twice the standard pay at that time. A persistent and ambitious man, he eventually bought out all of his partners to carry on with a plan to build a comprehensive plant containing a glass factory, steel foundry, and more, all in one place.

In 1919, Ford made his son Edsel Ford president, and his grandson, Henry Ford II, would take the reins in 1943. During World War II, Ford took a break from producing civilian cars to focus on building tanks, planes, and trucks for the military. But soon enough, Ford II would give the company a total revival, hiring new and impressive talent, including Robert McNamara, who would eventually serve as Secretary of Defense. The Thunderbird, Mustang, and Bronco were all introduced during these years.

Ford has owned many other car companies over the years, including Jaguar, Aston Martin, and Volvo, but would later sell these for financial reasons. In 2018, Ford announced that it would focus solely on pickup trucks, SUVs, and crossovers, which is reflected in the brand’s current lineup.
